In a breaking news report, the Tripura government has ordered an inquiry into the sudden death of hundreds of purple moorhen, which are western migratory birds, in the western villages of Udaipur in Gomati district. The forest department has also sent wildlife experts to the area to investigate the matter.
According to Dr DK Sharma, the principal chief conservator of forest, wildlife officials headed by the district forest officer (Gomati) have been sent to the affected localities to caution villagers not to consume any dead birds and to help the department collect the carcass for investigation.
The bird samples will be sent to the animal resource development department's laboratory for autopsy. Dr DK Sharma also stated that it seems the birds had consumed insecticides, which were used in nearby agricultural fields and might have dissolved in the marshy land due to rain.
Sources indicate that the villagers of Khilpara of Udaipur noticed a few migratory birds floating in a big water body on Thursday, which prompted them to inform the forest department.
The sudden death of these birds is a cause for concern, and the inquiry ordered by the government will investigate the cause of death and recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
