Tripura CM Stands Firm on 2014 CAA Cut-off, Pushes Smart Meters Despite Resistance

Agartala, July 23: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) with the December 31, 2014 cut-off, rejecting tribal demands to change it to March 24, 1971.

“We are following the national policy. The 2014 cut-off is final and necessary to maintain legal consistency,” said Dr. Saha during a press conference in Agartala.

The statement comes in response to growing pressure from TIPRA Motha and other indigenous groups demanding protection of tribal identity and rollback to the earlier date. Tensions continue to simmer as both indigenous rights and migration concerns take center stage ahead of the next assembly session.

Meanwhile, the state’s power department has begun widespread installation of smart and prepaid meters despite public protests in Agartala and Dharmanagar. Opponents claim the meters cause overbilling and are unaffordable for low-income families. However, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath defended the move, stating: “Smart meters will bring transparency and stop power theft.”

The dual policy push—citizenship and energy reform—is likely to define Tripura’s political narrative in the coming months.
