The Government of Tripura has officially launched a new rural employment initiative aimed at improving livelihoods in underdeveloped regions of the state. The scheme, titled Tripura Rural Workforce Mission, was inaugurated today by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at a formal event held at the State Secretariat in Agartala.
According to the government, the initiative will provide structured skill training and job opportunities to over 50,000 rural youth in the first phase. The scheme is being implemented in collaboration with several national and international development agencies.
“The goal is not only to generate employment but to create sustainable livelihoods. This mission focuses on agriculture, handicrafts, and eco-tourism,” said the Chief Minister during his address. He also emphasized that special attention will be given to women and tribal communities.
In related developments, the state cabinet has also approved an additional ₹150 crore for rural infrastructure development under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which will be synchronized with the new scheme.
Opposition parties have cautiously welcomed the announcement but called for transparency in implementation. “We support any effort to create employment, but we will be vigilant to ensure there is no corruption,” said Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Asish Kumar Saha.
Local residents in several districts expressed cautious optimism about the new plan. “We have seen announcements before. What matters is if jobs actually reach the villages,” said Ranjita Debbarma, a community leader from Khowai district.
The government has promised a quarterly review of the project’s progress and plans to publish a public report by the end of this year.
