Gomati District President of Tipra Motha and Member of the District Council (MDC) Sadagar Kalai has filed an FIR against the owner of a Facebook page named News Anusandhan/News Search, accusing it of spreading hate speech, defamatory content, and attempting to incite communal tensions in Tripura.
The controversy erupted after the Facebook page published a controversial news item that used the Bengali phrase “Pradyot er Batpari”, which Sadagar Kalai strongly condemned as an offensive and derogatory remark. According to Kalai, the term “Batpar”—commonly used to imply dishonesty or fraudulent behavior—was deliberately employed in a manner that not only disrespects Tipra Motha Chairman and royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, but also insults the entire Tiprasa (Scheduled Tribe) community.
MDC Kalai Condemns the Post, Warns Against Communal Tension
Addressing the media, MDC Kalai stated that such insensitive and inflammatory language directly targets Indigenous communities in Tripura and could exacerbate existing social tensions. He pointed out that Pradyot Manikya Debbarma is not just a political figure but also a respected leader of the Indigenous Tiprasa community, and any derogatory remark directed at him could be perceived as an attack on the dignity and identity of the entire tribal population in the state.
Expressing deep concern over the divisive narrative being spread online, he warned that such statements could lead to communal disharmony if not addressed immediately. He also called upon law enforcement agencies to take strong action to prevent the misuse of social media platforms for spreading misinformation and hatred.
Legal Action Demanded Under SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
MDC Kalai has demanded strict legal action against all individuals involved in the management and operation of the News Anusandhan/News Search Facebook page. He has specifically urged the authorities to invoke the SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, a law designed to protect Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from discrimination, harassment, and hate speech.
In his complaint, he has requested that action be taken against:
• The owner of the Facebook page
• The administrator and moderators of the page
• Any other individuals involved in creating or promoting the post
Kalai stressed that social media must not be used as a tool to degrade communities or spread divisive propaganda. He called upon the administration to ensure that responsible journalism and ethical reporting are upheld to maintain peace and harmony in Tripura.
Appeal for Immediate Intervention
MDC Kalai further urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to closely monitor social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and defamatory content. He warned that if such provocative statements are allowed to circulate unchecked, they could trigger unrest among different communities.
He reiterated that Tipra Motha stands for unity and the rights of Indigenous people, and any attempt to vilify its leadership or insult the Tiprasa community will not be tolerated.
The matter has now reached the attention of higher authorities, and further investigations are expected to take place in the coming days. Meanwhile, local residents and supporters of Tipra Motha have expressed their solidarity with MDC Kalai, urging the administration to take swift action to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
