Tension has gripped Gandatwisa in the Gandacherra sub-division of Tripura following the tragic death of a 21-year-old student, who was allegedly beaten with iron rods and electrocuted while trying to save a mentally challenged boy at a local fair. The incident has led to widespread violence, prompting authorities to impose Section 144 and ban internet services for 24 hours.
The young man was assaulted on July 7 and succumbed to his injuries on Friday afternoon at GBP Hospital in Agartala. As his body reached Gandatwisa, an angry mob set multiple houses and shops ablaze, escalating the unrest.
Residents, in fear for their safety, have fled their homes, seeking refuge in nearby jungles. Despite the deployment of a large number of security forces, the situation remains volatile. Police have resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowds.
High-ranking officials, including the district Superintendent of Police and other administration officials, are on the ground, working to restore order and maintain peace. Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma visited the hospital earlier to check on the victim and assured the family of firm action and justice.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the brutal attack. The victim’s father has called for justice, demanding the death penalty for those responsible for his son’s death.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
