Breaking News: 2,475 Tourists, Including 60 Students from Namchi Govt College, Stranded in Lachen and Lachung, Mangan District
Mangan, June 17th, 2023 (IPR) - Due to heavy rainfall over the past three days, the road connectivity in Chungthang, Mangan District has been severely disrupted, leaving 2,464 tourists, including 60 students from Namchi Government College, stranded in Lachen and Lachung.
Responding to the crisis, the District Administration, under the guidance of Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, took immediate action to initiate the evacuation process. The District Administration, led by DC Mangan, Shri Hem Kumar Chettri, and SP Mangan, Shri Tshering Gyatso Bhutia, began the evacuation operation at 11:00 am today. The state government has been providing continuous direction and support to the District Administration, and all necessary preparations were made on the evening of June 16th, 2023. Various agencies, including QRT (DDMA), Sikkim Police, GREF, BRO, ITBP, Army, and the Travel Agency Association of Sikkim, have been deployed to assist in the evacuation efforts.
As of now, approximately 19 buses and 70 small vehicles have been mobilized for relief operations. At the time of reporting, three buses and two light vehicles have successfully evacuated 123 passengers and tourists, who are now being transported towards Gangtok. Additional buses and vehicles are being arranged and are en route to assist in the ongoing evacuation process.
It has been reported that two log bridges are being constructed over the landslide-affected area by the public and local Panchayats to restore connectivity and facilitate the evacuation efforts.
The District Administration, in coordination with the concerned authorities and agencies, is working tirelessly to ensure the safe evacuation of all stranded individuals. Efforts are being made to expedite the rescue operation and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
