Ujjayanta Palace Durbar Hall Misused for G20 Summit Dinner, INTACH Tripura Condemns State Government's Disrespect for Heritage

The use of the Durbar Hall at Ujjayanta Palace State Museum for hosting the recent 2022 G20 Summit Dinner on 3rd April 2023 has drawn strong criticism from M K Pragya Deb Burman, the state Convenor of INTACH Tripura, on behalf of members of the INTACH Tripura Chapter and citizens of the state. The Durbar Hall has been held dear and respected by the people of the state for over 122 years, and has been used for important, official purposes such as the coronation/installation ceremony of the rulers of Tripura, which were religious in nature.

The official dinner held at the Durbar Hall was a deviation from its customary use, and has therefore been seen as disrespectful to the heritage and customary religious practices and rites associated with the space. Even during the period when Ujjayanta Palace served as the State Assembly building, the Durbar Hall was used for official purposes by the respected Speaker, and not for entertainment or dining.

The INTACH Tripura Chapter has condemned the State Government's decision to use the Durbar Hall for the G20 Summit Dinner, and has expressed concern about the potential misuse of other historic spaces in the state. The organization has shared photographs of the event, which shows the poorly placed statue where the throne used to be, and a gaudy dining arrangement, which the organization sees as an insult to the sanctity of the space.

The INTACH Tripura Chapter has appealed to the Government of Tripura and their department to respect the sentiments of various communities, minorities, and religious customs of the people of Tripura before holding events in such historic places. The organization hopes that the Durbar Hall will not be converted into a party or dining room in the future, and has called for the preservation and restoration of the space to its former state.

It is worth noting that there were plans by the museum authorities to recreate the Durbar Hall with a replica of the Throne/Chaturdala, for the purpose of educating fellow citizens about the history and heritage of the space. However, the recent use of the space for the G20 Summit Dinner has raised concerns about the potential misuse of such spaces in the future.
